I combine an expert practice in digital evidence / computer forensics with academic and public policy work. My instructions as an expert witness have included cases of global hacking, terrorism, fraud, software piracy, murder, large-scale distribution of indecent images, work in the International Courts and support for a judicial inquiry. Formerly at the LSE for many years I currently hold a Professorship at Birmingham City University and a Visiting Professorship at de Montfort University; I also lecture at other universities. My public policy work is usually carried out in association with the Foundation for Information Policy Research, Privacy International and the Open Rights Group. I am a former UK Parliamentary Specialist Advisor including most recently on the Investigatory Powers legislation and frequently appear before other Select Committees.
